Second you need to contact John Crawford via phone (508-240-4603) or email (johncr181@gmail.com) to confirm if you want an eBook pdf student manual or a hardcopy student manual which is included in the $120 non-member/$80 member fee. The ebook version is available immediately. The hardcopy book takes about 2 weeks. John can answer your questions about how the class will be conducted via Zoom and some sessions in-person in a classroom. You will need the student manual to prepare for the on-line Zoom sessions.

Classes will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Tuesday nights for 6 weeks. Each class will review the reading material, provide some instructor presentations and in some situations live demonstrations.

An optional final exam will be available at the conclusion of the last class on Knots & Lines.

 

SESSION PREPARATION: Each session is on a different topic. Each topic has a separate student guide which should be read or reviewed before the session begins.

Rules of the Road – Zoom

SESSION 1: This seminar covers a topic all boaters need to know — Rules of the Road. Our approach is a practical one. We apply common-sense interpretations to the rules to help make them easier to understand and remember. The reference for this seminar is the United States Coast Guard Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook, which is the complete listing of the rules. Although relatively comprehensive, this seminar does not contain details of all the rules. It focuses on the rules governing situations most likely to be encountered by newer recreational boaters.

Confidence in Docking & Undocking – Zoom

SESSION 2: Docking can be one of the most stressful tasks you can perform, especially if you are a new boater. Closely related as a source of anxiety is maintaining control of your boat at slow speed in close proximity to other boats and fixed objects. With the knowledge you’ll gain in this seminar — coupled with your on-the-water practice — your confidence in docking, undocking, and slow-speed maneuvering will increase and your boating will be both safer and more enjoyable. Let’s get started.

SESSION 3: Upon completion of this seminar, you will have gained an understanding of how to control your boat while operating at slow speed or on plane; how to deal with tide, wind and seas; how to safely navigate inlets and river bends; and how to tie the knots that are most often used when at sea.

Anchoring – in-person Classroom

SESSION 4: This seminar is on anchoring with assurance! All boaters will face situations where they want or need to anchor. This seminar will give you the knowledge and insights you need to anchor with confidence, and members of your local club will be happy to help you practice anchoring under local conditions, so you don’t get carried away.

Emergencies on Board – Zoom

SESSION 5: Boating is serious fun. Understanding and being prepared to handle the kinds of emergencies that can arise while boating is important. So is knowing how to call for help when you need it. Welcome to Emergencies on Board: Preparation for Handling Common Problems.

Knots & Line Handling & Final Exam – in-person Classroom

SESSION 6: Marlinespike seamanship encompasses the art and scie nce of working with rope and line. With the completion of this material the recreational boater should understand knots, bends, and hitches; know which one to use; and be able to tie them. You will also know how to select line for its intended use and have the knowledge you need to be able to care for your lines.

Let us know if you would like additional tutoring or clarification on any topic. Proctors are available from 6:30PM before each class for individual or group assistance. If you miss a class, be sure to keep up with the reading and homework.

Recordings of each class will be made available a day or two after each session.
